Scott F. Gilbert

The Howard A. Schneiderman Professor of Biology at Swarthmore College, USA, where he has taught developmental genetics, embryology, and the history of biology for many years.

Scott is the author of over 200 articles and several books, including Developmental Biology (the most widely used textbook in the field, now in its twelfth edition), and Ecological Developmental Biology. He is an elected a fellow of the AAAS and has received several awards, including the Dwight J. Ingle Memorial Writing Award, the Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award, and the Kowalevsky Prize in Evolutionary Developmental Biology.

In 2002, the Society for Developmental Biology awarded Scott its first Viktor Hamburger Prize for Excellence in Education, while in 2024 the European Society for Evolutionary Developmental Biology awarded him its Biennial Prize for outstanding contributions to the field of evolutionary developmental biology.
